You can't have missed this Mastercard commercial if you've had the TV on over the holidays – the charmingly animated ad with the '50s vibe featuring a house that looks like a face, set in a fresh blanket of snow? If it looks familiar to you, that's because it's a tip-of-the-hat to a Disney short from 1952 called The Little House (now available on the company's Rarities DVD), with art direction by the great Mary Blair. The short was itself based on the classic kids' book by Virginia Lee Burton, about how the city begins to encroach on a rural house. As the Mastercard people might say, book: $16. DVD, $32.99. Adapative reuse: priceless.
