Not bad winning a Pulitzer Prize for your first book, a collection of short stories called Interpreter of Maladies. That's what British-born, Jhumpa Lahiri, of Bengali descent, pulled off in 1999. Her first novel, called The Namesake, is the time-jumping story of the Ganguli family from India, and the difficulties of assimilating into American culture. The movie version is coming out in March -- given the generation-spanning nature of the story, this is one of those 'read the book first' occasions.
