He may not be a household name, but in the art world, one of the greatest practitioners of the mixed-media art form called assemblage was Joseph Cornell (1903-1972). He's best known for his box constructions, filled with impeccably arranged photographs and a variety of found objects. Appreciation for these works has only grown over the years and that's apparent at a major exhibition on now at the Smithsonian though February 19, 2007, "Joseph Cornell: Navigating the Imagination."
