Amy Winehouse is a 23-year-old singer-songwriter who has found her voice.
True, you'll hear shades of Sarah Vaughan, Shirley Bassey (in a fierce mood), even some Motown thumping through. And Winehouse name-checks Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway in her lyrics. But she sounds so good, and so fresh, that she really stands on her own. Validation came last week at the Brit Awards, where Winehouse won the Best British Female Artist award.
Her album "Back to Black" will be released here on March 13th. Best tracks: "Rehab" and "You Know I'm No Good." Watch the "Rehab" video here.
Winehouse has a few U.S. tour dates coming up. Catch her if you can.
