Marc Newson designs in the future tense; everything he creates seems to catch a wave that hasn't crested yet.
Born in Australia, Newson is now based in London, but his designs can be increasingly found scattered across the globe. For another two weeks, there's an exhibition of new, limited-edition works at the Gagosian gallery in New York. It will give you a good idea of his forward-looking sensibility. If you go to the exhibit, theme the day with lunch beforehand at the Newson-designed Lever House Restaurant.
In Madrid, the Hotel Puerta America was created by an all-star team: the sixth floor is Mr. Newson's work. So are Qantas' beloved Skybeds. They're so popular, in fact, that Qantas has turned over the entire interior cabin design of its new A380 fleet to Newson. Look for them to go into service next year.
He may always be looking ahead, but everywhere we look, the present is very much a Newson moment.
