If any singer/songwriter sounds like autumn, it's Patty Griffin, whose voice always sounds inflected with the melancholy of October light. She writes most of her own music and let's say that the songs are true to her voice, though with a thread of sly wit. Her new album, "Children Running Through," is due out on February 6th. Even if Griffin has experimented with differing styles over the years, something about each song is always unmistakably Griffin. This one has a more stripped-down feel to it. She says, "Some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard is when you catch somebody singing to themselves. I wanted to make music that had that feeling." Lots of people have covered her songs -- most notably the Dixie Chicks -- who have recorded three of her tunes: "Top of the World," "Truth No. 2" and "Let Him Fly." You can expect covers of some of the new ones down the road. Meanwhile, Griffin is starting a new tour. Catch her if you can, she's every bit as good live. The schedule is here.
