We're bombarded with images these days, coming at us nearly every waking minute. It takes a lot to find still images that are so compelling that they could stop us in our tracks. These did.
They're the work of photographer Pierre Gonnord, whose fascination with the varieties of the human face yields a bounty of resonant, unexpectedly emotional insights from the viewer. You'll see allusions to great painters and paintings (Rembrandt, Vermeer) though it's not necessary to play guess-the-reference to consider these extraordinary works themselves.
