Lionel Shriver broke through with her last book, We Need to Talk About Kevin, about a mother coming to terms with a son who commits a Columbine-style massacre at his high school in upstate New York.
Ms. Shriver has a new book out early next month called The Post-Birthday World. It's a story that follows two tracks: one in which the lead character, a children's book illustrator, gives in to temptation and cheats on her life-partner, the other in which she does not. Shriver is far too good a novelist to settle for easy moralizing. Rather, it's a probing, perceptive look at the people we love and the choices we make.
