Slacker success.
That's the oxymoron at the big heart of the first movie screenplay by Canadian author Douglas Coupland (Generation X) for Everything's Gone Green, opening in limited release April 13. Coupland fans can relax: the author is a natural in this genre, too.
With a sure touch, Coupland tells the story of a twenty-something named Ryan (Paulo Costanzo) who loses his job and gets dumped by his girlfriend on the same day. Coupland says the movie is about "when you get older and you feel certain doors closing very quickly on you. It deals with that feeling of now or never."
Comic collisions come from Ryan's plunge into a new lifestyle (everyone around him is making money and not always on the up-and-up -- so why not him?) and how that affects his pursuit of a new romance.
The movie, which is set in Vancouver, gets a lot of color from the locale (and not just green), and the Canadian indie rock bands who contribute to the soundtrack are also a big plus.
In all, a smart, funny slacker success.
