As brick and mortar video stores fade into history, it can be tricky to get your hands on offbeat and more obscure releases. Sure, Netflix does a terrific job with mainstream movies and they stock some oddballs. It's not the same thing, though, as poking around the dusty corners of a video store run by passionate movie buffs.
For that, you need Facets, which has over 25,000 rare and out-of-print films on video and DVD that you can rent by mail -- or from the store if you live in Chicago. Membership is $24 a month for unlimited rentals.
They also sell rarities such as The Devil, Probably (1977) by Robert Bresson or Record of a Tenement Gentleman (1947) by Yasujiro Ozu.
