stuff to buy stuff to do stuff to see

Voice: angelic, face: angelic. All the rest: we're guessing it's a little more complicated than that. And that's doubtless the appeal for the growing fan base of singer/songwriter/actor Jay Brannan.

He first drew notice for his performance in John Cameron Mitchell's movie Shortbus (the DVD is out on March 13). In it, he played guitar and sang a song he wrote called "Soda Shop." So sweetly sung by Mr. Brannan, you may think it's a simple '50s throwback, when you hear talk of sock hops and shoo-be-doobie-doo-wops. But it's a little more complicated than that. In fact, it's about someone who is drinking way too much.

It made Brannan an online star -- the video of him performing it has been viewed nearly a million times. (Does the fact that he's shirtless, performing in his bathroom have anything to do with it? It might.) But we think the rest of his songs hold similar charms and revelations. You can hear more on YouTube and buy four studio tracks via Snocap here.

The guy has a vocal tone so pure, you just have to hear it. There's nothing complicated about it.
