"Sounds that should help you groove" is a lyric from "I Want to Take You Higher" and seriously funky groovin' is what Sly and the Family Stone is all about. The band, which was together from 1967-1983, had an enormous impact on the music scene, particularly among soul and funk performers.
If Sly isn't the household name he once was, in part it's because he's been virtually a recluse since he retired. So when Epic Legacy releases remastered versions of the band's first seven albums next month, it's sure to be a revelation for younger listeners. Even those familiar with "Dance to the Music," and "Everyday People" may be surprised how vibrant Sly and Family still sound. There are bonus tracks, too, of previously unreleased material, including a cover of "I Can't Turn You Loose."
