Worth a detour, as Michelin likes to say, is Copia -- The American Center for Wine, Food, and the Arts. Located in the Napa Valley, it's a grapehead and foodie wonderland.
It was in 1988 that Robert Mondavi and others began to plan a non-profit center focusing on wine and its relationship to food. Construction began eleven years later and Copia opened in 2001. In the 80,000-square-foot building, there are daily food and wine classes, a centerpiece exhibition called "Forks in the Road" that looks at American food culture, themed lunches and dinners, a farmer's market (that one's in the parking lot), movies, concerts, and lectures.
If you're planning a tour of the Napa Valley, kicking off with a visit to Copia is the way to go.
