Jack Smith and the Destruction of Atlantis is a documentary about the gay Lower East Side underground filmmaker, photographer, anarchist, anticapitalist, and inspiration to Andy Warhol and John Waters.
Smith, who died in 1989, became a counterculture hero when his 1963 movie Flaming Creatures, a randy tribute to actress Maria Montez, was denounced in Congress (Strom Thurmond railed against it) and widely banned.
The documentary, directed by Mary Jordan, is a celebration of this seminal figure, and begins a limited engagement on April 11 at New York City's Film Forum.
