There's something a little glossy and pat about most shelter rags: While we enjoy the confectionery parade of artful interiors in Domino or Elle Decor, they're not terribly likely to equip us with ideas (or energy) for the pimping of our own pad, and more likely to remind us that we don't have a decorator on the payroll.
The much-loved Apartment Therapy, a shelter blog dedicated to stylish D.I.Y., has the antidote: The House Tours section of the site is full of photo tours of real peoples' homes, with useful, engaging commentary about their renovation/decoration tips, tricks and learned-from missteps, including what-do-I-do? scenarios you'd never see in the average home magazine (windows overlooking an air shaft? try mirrors in the sills!).
Galleries of more than a hundred different reader homes provide a terrific voyeuristic thrill, as well as some truly inspirational examples of do-it-yourself gumption.
