Dance fans: don't miss this one.
One of the dance world's extraordinary performers, Carolyn Brown, has written a book called Chance and Circumstance about her career, which spanned more than twenty years, from the 1950s-1970s. But the context of that career -- she was a principal dancer in Merce Cunningham's company -- makes it even more fascinating.
At that time, John Cage was the Cunningham musical director and no less than Robert Rauschenberg did the set, lighting, and costume designs, though everything was done on a toe-shoestring.
It was an era of limited resources and infinite talent in modern dance, when everything seemed possible.
