These aren't just doors, or even just doors transformed into art. They're a gateway into another time -- the 1400s, the mind of a Renaissance artist -- Lorenzo Ghiberto, and a Florence landmark -- the first and only time these newly restored artworks have been or will be in the U.S.
The lucky museumgoers of Atlanta's High Museum of Art can see the "Gates of Paradise" now through July 15th. Then they're off to Chicago's Art Institute, follwed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and back to Florence.
Once they've returned to Italy, they'll be reassembled into the original framework inside the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, then hermetically sealed. They will never travel again.
