stuff to buy stuff to do stuff to see

Now that the Broadway theater season has wrapped up (the Tonys will be awarded June 10th), we turn to what's in the pipeline for next season.

(Relatively) safe bets include "Young Frankenstein," a follow-up to Mel Brooks' "The Producers," and The Little Mermaid from Disney. The Roundabout Theatre will transfer "Sunday in the Park with George" from the U.K. with the stars of the production, Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell (both of whom won Olivier awards for their performance). The original cast recording of that production is at iTunes.

Another British import, the musicalization of the movie Billy Elliot, with a score by Elton John, may turn up stateside. But, yes, we still make musicals over here, too. One of the more promising is "Catch Me If You Can," with music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman ("Hairspray"), book by Terrence McNally, and direction by Jack O'Brien.

As always, there will be disproportionately few plays. One that looks promising is "The Starry Messenger" by Kenneth Lonergan starring Matthew Broderick as an astronomy teacher at the Hayden Planetarium dealing with matters cosmic and personal.
