Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts may be the gold standard of outdoor classical music festivals, but they're not the only game in town. OK, they're the only game in town, but not around the country. Here are three such festivals, all of which will brings smiles to a summer night.

Pennsylvania: Wildflower Music Festival hosts classical (and other) evenings in the small town of White Mills, located between Hawley and Honesdale. Kyler Brown is their well-respected new artistic director.

Illinois: The Grant Park Music Festival is rightly proud of being the nation’s only remaining free, outdoor classical music series. In 2004, they moved to the outdoor pavilion in Millennium Park, designed by Frank Gehry.

California: Music in the Mountain Festival takes place in the Sierra Nevada foothills and has expanded in the 25 years since it began to festivals in spring, summer, and fall, as well as the holidays.
