Texas-born old-soul singer Ruthie Foster steps up her game with the release of "The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster."
Malcolm "Papa Mali" Welbourne produced the album and he coaxes all the soulful grooves and shadings out of Foster's voice. It's a less rootsy, more classic soul album than she's previously recorded and it seems perfectly suited to that voice and to Foster's songs.
The title, by the way, comes from the Maya Angelou poem "Phenomenal Woman," which is a song on the album. It's also a point of pride, an affirmation, and we couldn't come up with a better adjective if we tried.
