Sociologists could probably explain why horror movies seem to go best with summertime -- perhaps in winter our atavistic selves still focus on survival. In the bounty of summer, though, we love having the bejeepers scared out of us.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon may not be a great movie. But in the right circumstances -- a summer night, modest expectations, an obliging thunderstorm, the DVD of this movie could be just the thing.
This one's a 'documentary' about a wannabe psycho slasher who's planning his slashfest over the town of Glen Echo. Given that setup, it's no surprise it's a comedy/horror mashup. Director Scott Glosserman brings real wit to the proceedings, namechecks all those who belong in Freddy Krueger's club, and manages to make it, in the end, pretty scary, too.
