Charley Harper has a way with birds. Insects, too. Nice elephants.
In fact, we think he's one of the all-time great artist-illustrators -- one who infuses his lines and colors with humor, charm, warmth. Mr. Harper has a lot of fans -- one of them being Todd Oldham, who is credited with rediscovering the artist's work. Out shortly is a book by Mr. Oldham called Charley Harper: An Illustrated Life -- a four-hundred-page, large-format tribute to the artist's work.
Mr. Harper is 84 and continues working as he always has from his Cincinnati studio. Long may he paint.
