When we wrote last month about Once, the small, indie, Irish musical charmer, we certainly didn't expect to see another small, indie, musical charmer (this time American) come down the pike so soon. But Colma: The Musical manages to confound a lot of expectations, so why not ours?
It's the story of three pals in a sleepy San Francisco suburb who are just out of high school -- their friendships, relationships, and slide into adulthood. But it all feels freshly minted; its energy makes it jump off the screen. There is a terrific score by H. P. Mendoza, who also stars, and an impressive directing debut by Richard Wong. What a treat!
Colma opens in San Francisco on June 22 and on July 6 in NYC.
