Now that New Jersey is no longer the epicenter of HBO's world, it's anyone's guess what (if anything) will become the network's flagship. "Flight of the Conchords," which debuts this Sunday, is probably too loose-limbed for that spot, but it is a lot of fun to watch.
The show stars Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, a two-man band (they call themselves "New Zealand's fourth most popular folk-parody duo") with no entourage except each other. The HBO series places them in New York where they struggle to put the band on the map. At key points, McKenzie and Clement stop and sing, in their low-key, deadpan way, about a particular plot point. That's about it for concept, but thanks to the stars' charms -- which they steadfastly undersell -- it's easy to get hooked.
