Route 66 gets the nostalgia crowd, but America has plenty of other Routes worth a detour.
Route 22 may not have much name recognition, but for photographer Benjamin Swett, it was a road he wanted to revisit. He recalled from his childhood that this 300-mile highway running from Manhattan to Montreal was once a bucolic place for motoring and discovering historical and natural sites en route.
These days, you're more likely to discover OTB parlors or ruins. Even a JC Penney looks abandoned. How this came to pass is the subject of this fine and moving book.
You can see some of the images on Mr. Swett's site and buy the book here.
