That great actress Norma Aleandro is only one reason to see the movie Live-In Maid, opening in limited release next Wednesday.
The comedy tells the story of Beba (Aleandro), who plays a divorcee living in a luxe Buenos Aires apartment. Problem? Cash flow. Dora, her maid of 30 years, tries to hang in there, but eventually, after seven months of no pay, their relationship changes.
Written and directed by Jorge Gaggero, the movie reflects shifting economic circumstances in Argentina seen through a personal relationship. It's a nuanced, unsentimental delight, which makes that reason number two to see it.
Reason number three to see the film is another Norma, Norma Argentina. A traffic cop and housekeeper for more than two decades, she auditioned for the role with over 1,000 other Argentinean actors and non-professionals and got the job. She holds her own with Norma Aleandro, which is no small feat.
