stuff to buy stuff to do stuff to see

It's been a long time since the ballet world has produced a charismatic figure along the lines of Christopher Wheeldon.

The British-born dancer-turned-choreographer was with New York City Ballet, first as a performer, then as an artist-in-residence. He left at the beginning of the year to form his own company, Morphoses.

Wheeldon and Co. may say that the mission is to "restore ballet as a force of innovation" but what they really mean is they want to take the stodge out of the tutus and toe shoes and get some 20-somethings in the door.

Will it be a great leap forward? Given Wheeldon's magnetic force in the dance world, to say nothing of his talent, it may well be. Stay tuned as they unveil their first performance ever at the Vail International Dance Festival on August 10. After that, they'll perform at Sadler's Wells in London in September and in New York in October.
