"The Host," a Korean monster thriller (that also straddles comedy and drama genres) is out on DVD tomorrow and it's well worth a look for fans of scary movies and Loch Ness lore.
The movie takes a true incident as a starting point: In 2000, a U.S. military employee stationed in Korea dumped formaldehyde into the system leading to the Han River. Though the U.S. government would not turn over the employee in question, the Korean government charged and convicted the man of a crime in his absence.
What if, the movie wonders, a mutant developed as a result of the formaldehyde? And to that end adds lots of scary special effects, heightened by suspense, leavened with humor.
