Atlanta-born artist Tony Hernandez has an instantly recognizable style. He uses a technique called encaustic, in which hot wax and pigment are blended, that Mr. Hernandez then applies to birch wood. The subject matter is almost invariably a child set in a small section at the center of the composition.
The children seem to be from another time, almost from a fable. There is beauty and stillness, but always a suggestion of vulnerability, perhaps even jeopardy from a world that may not be kept forever at bay.
In San Francisco on July 11, the artist will have a new show opening at the Modernism gallery. See these images in person if you can -- they'll stay with you.
