The Independent Film Channel and Nerve have put together a roundup of the 50 Greatest Sex Scenes in Cinema.
Since these lists are both arguable and designed to be argued, the criteria is admittedly subjective. What makes a great sex scene? The editors write, "In true Justice Potter Stewart fashion, we just know it when we see it, whether it shocks us, titillates us, turns us on, breaks our hearts or confounds our expectations."
We were surprised by choices such as The Kiss from 1896 (!) and Young Frankenstein, while other movies -- High Art from 1998 -- we'd missed altogether. Each selection is persuasively argued, and some of picks are accompanied by a video of the scene in question.
