It's a Hollywood-ready story that happens to be true.
Alek Wek was born in Sudan in 1977. While still a child, civil war flared up and she fled the country on foot with her family. Four years after her family sought political asylum in the U.K., she was talent spotted at a street fair.
Since then, if you've picked up a magazine any time in the last few years, you've seen this strikingly beautiful model many times. In addition to modeling clothes for other designers, Ms. Wek has her own line of handbags under the name of Wek 1933.
And as of August 28, her autobiography will be in bookstores. Titled Alek: From Sudanese Refugee to International Supermodel. It's not often that a devastating civil war is mixed with high fashion -- but it is here and it's an unusual, memorable story.
