Whether or not you've stretched out on a towel there or ridden the Cyclone, you probably have an image in your mind's eye of Coney Island, America's most iconic boardwalk.

As the fate of its amusement park -- the last vestige of its early-to-mid 20th century heyday as a vacation destination -- hangs in the balance this summer, we're revisiting one of our favorite artifacts, Bruce Gilden's Coney Island.

The Brooklyn-born photographer had barely picked up a camera when he began shooting the area in the late '60s, and his images from the next two decades poignantly (and often wryly) document the slow decline of Coney's era of enchantment.
