British author Rupert Thomson has earned a devoted following for his novels, starting in 1987 with Dreams of Leaving. He's not well-known in the U.S., but that could change with the publication tomorrow of his latest, Death of a Murderer.
While his books have the propulsion of thrillers, they also explore the deep recesses of the subconscious, and that's particularly true of the new book. It's a fictional account of the hours following the death of Myra Hindley (though she isn't named), Britain's reviled serial killer. With her in the morgue is Office Billy Tyler, and the book follows his long night of the soul in Hindley's company.
