We'll admit our undying love for Leslie Nielsen up front.
Having played straight roles for most of his early career, Nielsen scored big as a comic actor in Airplane! ("And don't call me Shirley!") and The Naked Gun(s), embodying a kind of deadpan silliness that no one does better.
So while we're waiting for the new season of television programming to kick in, we can't think of a better way to fill in the gap than Nielsen's six-episode series "Police Squad!," now on DVD, on which he plays Det. Frank Drebin. Drebin is the earnest hound-dog/lummox who blunders his way through what may be the most hilarious crime scenes and procedurals of all time.
Not everyone has a high tolerance for this kind of gag-a-minute humor. But we could watch these over and over. And have.
