Your first thought on seeing Vimeo might be, 'hey, it's just like YouTube.'

That's true in the sense that it's a website where you can upload and watch videos. But a key difference is that you can select different privacy options, which means your videos can be public or they can be available only to the people you want to see them. If you're getting creative with your videos, you may want to invite the world; if, say, it's a friends-and-family event you've captured, you may want to keep it private.

Vimeo also emphasizes a strong sense of community -- positive feedback is encouraged, but not flaming or trash talk. So while YouTube is a model, the strong community and privacy elements make it a smart, appealing alternative.
