The weather changes, the mood shifts and the multiplex gets a little less bombastic, as summer blockbusters cede the screens to fall's typically quirkier fare. Here are five film that have us excited for autumn.
Neurotic, witty, vicious, co-dependent -- Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) captures the full range of dysfunctional dynamics between two sisters (Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh), one of whom's readying to walk down the aisle, in Margot at the Wedding. (11/16) Trailer
Richard Gere, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Cate Blanchett (among others) all play Bob Dylan in I'm Not There, Todd Haynes' (Far From Heaven) fictionalized-but-realish narrative of the reluctant folk hero. Gleefully punts the biopic genre right out the window. (11/21) Trailer
A guy making you believe -- really believe -- that he's in love with Bianca, a sex doll he bought over the internet. If anyone can do it, it's Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson), in Lars and the Real Girl. (10/12) Trailer
Shiny, happy mainstream rom-coms need something extra to capture our attention. Michelle Pfeiffer plays Paul Rudd's older woman in (the just-renamed) All That Really Matters, directed by Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High) and starring Tracy Ullman -- as Mother Nature. That’ll do. (11/9) Trailer
Don't let the words "Ben Affleck’s directorial debut" keep you away from Gone Baby Gone (10/19), which stars the other Affleck (Casey), along with Ed Harris, in a small, affecting story of two men searching Boston for a missing 4-year-old girl. Trailer
