stuff to buy stuff to do stuff to see

Imagine a young Julie Christie cooing breathily to electro-harpsichord over the bass-and-tambourines backbeat from "Be My Baby" by The Ronettes, and you have something like "What's a Girl to Do" from the (generally irresistible) album "Fur and Gold," by the Brighton-based band Bat for Lashes.

Frontwoman Natasha Khan quit her gig as a nursery school teacher to put her noodlings and influences (which include Steve Reich) down on paper, and it paid off: The Anglo-Pakistani Khan made waves with her moody, hybrid sound at June's Glastonbury Festival. Give her a listen.

Gosh, if you can only think of the Ronettes (brilliant as they were), and the lovely Julie Christie, then you really need to listen to the Shangrilas. Try Walking in the Sand or I Can Never Go Home Anymore.
