There's more than a little Elliott Smith hovering over the California band Earlimart (named for a small town in that state's Central Valley), but with the recent release of their new album "Mentor Tormentor," they've also developed into a mature and deeply satisfying band of their own making. See/hear for yourself this fall as they tour the country.
The music doesn't drop quickly into any one category, which only adds to the appeal. It's dreamy lo-fi indie rock, but it's hardly low energy and there are some unexpectedly roiling sonic overlays. There's a strain of melancholy, though, that makes it a perfect soundtrack for the first stirrings of fall.
