It spawned catchphrases ("Plastics!"), inspired May-December romances ("Would you like me to seduce you?") and birthed the soundtrack to a generation ("The Sound of Silence," and the rest of Simon & Garfunkel's moody disc).
And to think The Graduate was only Mike Nichols' second foray into film direction (though his first, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, was no throwaway freshman effort). For the film's 40 candles, MGM’s Collector's Edition reissue features true widescreen (not just faux letterboxing, the better to admire Bancroft's gams), commentary with Nichols and Steven Soderbergh (the latter weighing in on the film's impact on the medium) and various docu-featurettes (our favorite deconstructs the famed seduction scene in loving detail) -- all that, and a copy of the full soundtrack, remastered.
