Miyuki Miyabe has a new book called The Devil's Whisper. She's a top mystery writer in Japan and this one sold two million copies in that country. It's the story of a 16-year-old who looks into three seemingly unrelated deaths.

A Spy By Nature is a first novel by Charles Cumming, who bases some of the circumstances of his protagonist, Alec Milious, on his own recruitment at a young age to the British Secret Intelligence Service.

The Meaning of Night: A Confession is virtually all plot -- 700 pages of it. Yet we sped through it, completely engrossed in this Victorian England revenge novel. It's full of familiar elements: a country house, an inheritance, hidden identities and relationships, betrayals, and murder. In the end, it may not transcend the genre, but it sure is fun getting there.
