For three days after Hurricane Katrina hit his hometown of New Orleans, Fats Domino was reported missing. He was found and -- despite his poor health, and the fact that his own home was destroyed by the floods -- he has spent the better part of two years working to reestablish New Orleans at the heart of American music.
The 79-year-old was the first name on the bill at last year's Jazz and Heritage Festival, and he's donated a chunk of proceeds from his latest album, Alive and Kickin', to the musical nonprofit Tipitina's Foundation. Add that to an already impressive six-decade career, and, yeah: it was about time for a hat-tip to Fats.
The roster of big names for Goin' Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino is impressive; everyone from Paul McCartney and Elton John to Lucinda Williams, Corinne Bailey Rae, B.B. King, and Norah Jones lined up to put their stamp on classics like "Blueberry Hill" and "I'm Walkin'" as a valentine to Domino and the city he refused to leave. (Partial proceeds from the double disc will help rebuild Domino's home.)
