Before there was Kiki and Herb, before Dame Edna blew the notes out of her unmentionables, before Jon Stewart put the fake into fake news, fakery was getting a good name in the persons of Jonathan and Darlene Edwards.
There is no song they couldn't mangle, wobble out of tune, go a little sharp on, or ever so slightly lose the waltz beat. Once you really listen, the awfulness is hilariously funny.
And intentional. Jonathan and Darlene Edwards were the fictional duo created by the late band leader Paul Weston and his wife, the very good singer Jo Stafford. They must have had a lot of fun slaughtering "I Love Paris," "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Take the A Train," and perhaps most infamously, The Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive."
Two albums of their optimistically titled Greatest Hits are available here.
