stuff to buy stuff to do stuff to see

For serious junkies, a fix doesn't come cheap -- especially in hardcover. Sure, the library's free, but there's the waiting and the fines. Not ideal.

No, for people who truly mainline books, Paperbackswap.com may be the way to go. It's part second-hand bookstore, part Netflix, and all (well, mostly) free. Sign up, list the books you're willing to swap and start shopping for free books. Hunt down (or browse and discover) the title you want, and its owner will drop it in the mail for you. And you do the same.

Newbies get three book credits right off the bat (so you don't have to wait for that fix), and you needn't worry about choice. At this writing, the Paperbackswap catalog counted nearly 1.6 million titles.
