We love Stephen Sondheim, as do most musical theater fans, but let's face it, he's not short on tributes: you'll find many evenings devoted to that very thing that have been duly, sometimes lavishly, recorded.
That other Stephen of musical theater, Stephen Schwartz, on the other hand, has never had a major New York gala in his honor. That all changes October 19th at Town Hall in New York, when performers come out to honor the man who wrote "Godspell," "Pippin," "The Magic Show," "Fosse," and the current long-running hit "Wicked." Among the many notable performers will be Jane Olivor, Karen Akers, Marc Kudisch, and Liz Callaway.
And one more thing: if you want to hear one of the most beautiful scores written for a musical, listen to Schwartz's The Baker's Wife. No, it wasn't a hit, but Paul Sorvino and Patti LuPone sing one lovely tune after another.
