stuff to buy stuff to do stuff to see

Sure, there's no place like home for the holidays, but may we tempt you with a few destinations that might make you change your mind?

Santa Fe, N.M....Warm temperatures mean holidays outside in New Mexico's capital, which glows golden at year's end as streets light up with farolitos (known elsewhere as luminaria). Stroll the Winter Spanish Market, sup on traditional Christmas posole (pork and hominy) stew, and expect a party: The town turns 400 this year.

Jackson, Wyo....Skiing is fine and all, but why not head to Jackson, Wyo. to get up close and personal with the world's largest elk herd? Horse-drawn sleighs take you to the Teton foothills, where the National Elk Refuge's more than 5,000 wintering beasts make for a breathtaking sight.

Portland, Maine...The charming Old Port district comes alive at the holidays, its brick houses and fishing boats festooned with lights. And warming up with one of the region's many microbrews and a bowl of lobster stew can't help but put you in the spirit of the season.
