One of our favorite books of the year is 30,000 Years of Art, a compendium of 1000 works of art that is different from other books of such expansive scope.
It's organized chronologically and features works being created in various parts of the world at the same time. Our art history education was distinctly Euro-centric, so it's eye-opening to see what was being created in civilizations around the globe, and not just, say, by the Dutch.
This makes a great gift ($49.95, currently discounted at Amazon to $29.97), but you may want to snag a copy for your own browsing pleasure.
