Here's a sweet, small indie flick -- so small and indie, in fact, that it doesn't even have a website -- a Charlie Brown in the world of George Clooneys.
It's called Flakes, and it's set in New Orleans. That's especially significant because the movie was filmed before Hurricane Katrina and was held for completion while its director shot another movie. That brings an antediluvian melancholy to this cheerful confederacy of dunces.
The flakes come in two varieties: the story takes place in a French Quarter restaurant that serves only cereal. Variety two, the people. Loopy Christopher Lloyd owns the eatery, the manager is a 20-something would-be rocker, played by Aaron Stanford, and his girlfriend is named Pussy Katz -- the delightful Zooey Deschanel. Stanford and Deschanel's characters form the emotional core of the story.
Flakes opens in limited release on December 19th. It may add an extra helping of cheer over the holidays.
