For those of you who've already had too much of the holiday spirit, here are some images that surfaced recently on the net that are as sobering as can be.
They're of the thermonuclear test in French Polynesia that took place in 1970 with the code name Licorne. The images were shot by the French army and were at one time available for purchase in Tahiti. Purely as images, they're genuinely awe-inspiring -- beautiful in a way, but terrifying and appalling beyond words. You can watch a short video of the test here.
