stuff to buy stuff to do stuff to see

Whether or not the story of Man in the Chair grabs you, there's a compelling reason to see this new movie when it opens in limited release on Friday.

It tells the story of a now-retired man who worked on the film crew of many Hollywood classics, including Citizen Kane. He meets a teenager, a fledgling director, and helps him with his movie for a competition. Winning will mean a scholarship for the teen and a chance to escape his troubled family life.

So, okay, as premises go it has a touch of hokum. However. The role of the Hollywood vet is played by Christopher Plummer, which immediately makes this indie offering worth your time. As actors go, he's got few peers.

Oscar talk to follow.
