The action-oriented, role-playing game Mass Effect for the Xbox has garnered some of the best reviews of the year.
It's the story of Captain Shepard (you can choose whether that's a man or a woman) who must save humanity (and other races) from a dire threat. It's not the basic premise that distinguishes Mass Effect, which, after all, is the premise of quite a lot of sci-fi. Instead, it's the epic scale of the adventure, the depth of imagination in creating the galaxy, the quality of the graphics, and the attention paid to the characters -- and there are an epic's worth of them.
If you're already a gamer, you probably know all about Mass Effect. For the rest of us, it may be the most persuasive case yet to give this world a try.
